KEVIN Murphy is here to stay.
Impressed with the performance of the new import on Sunday, San Miguel coach Leo Austria said Murphy is definitely staying with the Beermen for the rest of the conference after initially being labeled as a ‘back-up import’ for the injured AZ Reid.
“With the kind of game na pinakita ni Kevin, it’s obvious na siya magpapatuloy nun,” said Austria, when asked if Murphy will be staying on as import of San Miguel. “Si Kevin ‘yung import na hinahanap namin dito.”
Murphy had 37 points in his debut with San Miguel on Sunday after coming in to replace the injured Reid, but he couldn't save the Beermen from falling to a 2-3 (win-loss) record after a 109-108 loss to Magnolia.
But Austria has seen enough to assure Murphy is his man.
“Sa ganda ng pinakita niya and even nung umpisa pa lang, siya na magiging import namin because it’s unfair for AZ na we will force him to play and injured siya. It takes time to fully heal,” said Austria.
Austria expressed confidence the Beermen can turn things around and make it to the playoffs with Murphy, a second-round selection in the 2012 NBA Draft.
“I’m confident with our import. He played really well. I think he is our import who could help us to get into the playoffs,” said Austria. “The way Kevin is playing, I think we have a good choice.”
