AN autopsy report revealed fallen Blackwater forward Gilbert Bulawan suffered from an enlarged heart, the PBA team said on Monday.
This was relayed to SPIN.ph by Blackwater team owner Dioceldo Sy shortly after the report was released by doctors at the Sanctuarium Chapel where the autopsy was done.
“So it was an enlargement of the heart,” said Sy in a short message.
Sy bared Bulawan has thickened blood vessel in his hearts, a rare condition which explains why doctors never diagnosed his illness during regular team checkups and at a mandatory annual exam done at the Games Amusement Board (GAB) last January.
“Makapal daw ang mga ugat n’ya, that’s what our doctor said, maski ECG di makita, very rare daw 'yun,” he said.
Bulawan, 29, collapsed during Blackwater practice on Sunday afternoon at the SGS Gym and was rushed to the Capitol Medical Center, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Sy bared doctors spent almost 40 minutes trying to revive Bulawan at the hospital.
“I really got so emotional yesterday and even today, it happened right in front of me and I got scared when I saw his eyes turn white agad, so we immediately rushed him to the nearby hospital where doctors tried to revive him for 40 minutes,” Sy said.
“I am still in shock, he’s my godson pa naman,” said Sy of Bulawan, who was married to the Dr. Maria Louise Aberin last December 2014.
Sy said Blackwater has cancelled Monday's practice to give the whole team the time to mourn.
“At the moment, the team is devastated by the sudden death of Gilbert, I hope the team will recover the soonest. Life has to move on for us. It will be different now that he’s gone, but I am sure it’s what he wants us to do, continue our bid for greatness by slowly becoming a contender team,” Sy said.
Sy also bared that his Ever Bilena company will shoulder the hospital and burial expenses of their fallen enforcer, whose wake will be transferred to the Funeraria Paz inside the Manila Memorial Park in Sucat Paranaque starting on Monday evening.
The longtime basketball godfather also revealed they have already requested a short program where they will retire Bulawan’s No. 11 jersey prior to Blackwater’s first game in the PBA Governors Cup.
“We will retire his jersey, he deserves it. Kahit bago ang team namin he provided energy and leadership, siya ang nagi-inject ng energy sa team whenever we are down,” said Sy.
