TALK of a looming coaching change at GlobalPort grew louder as assistant coach Johnedel Cardel called the shots for the Batang Pier in their PBA Commissioner’s Cup match against Phoenix on Friday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
SPIN.ph reported on Thursday that former La Salle star Cardel has been tasked by no less than GlobalPort owner Mikee Romero to take over the reins, even if Pido Jarencio remained head coach in an official capacity.
Asked before the game who would coach the Batang Pier, a team staff confirmed it would be the former pro and MBA star.
“Cardel,” the team staff said.
True enough, Cardel was the one standing up and yelling instructions to the players from the start of the game, while Jarencio remained on his seat on the bench.
Jarencio, a former PBA star and owner of a UAAP championship with alma mater University of Santo Tomas, steered GlobalPort to a first-ever semifinal appearance in the Philippine Cup this season.
However, the former Ginebra mainstay has seen his team slump to a 2-8 card in the Commissioner's Cup amid a slew of injuries, primarily to backcourt stars Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle.
The last of those eight losses - a 116-94 defeat to Rain or Shine last Tuesday - saw Jarencio give way to Cardel late in the game on orders of Romero, a source told SPIN.ph.
