IT was classic, it was Jurassic. Just watching Asi Taulava and Mick Pennisi taking on each other during the Smartbro-PBA Philippine Cup game between NLEX and Barako Bull on Wednesday certainly brought back good old memories.

The two veteran warriors turned back the hands of time as they savored the moment of playing against each other late in their careers during the Road Warriors’ 93-85 win over the Energy at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Aside from the win, Taulava also got the better of his match-up with Pennisi as he finished with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, added 11 rebounds and four assists in 32 minutes of play.

Pennisi didn’t do badly as well, coming through with 11 points, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, to go with eight rebounds while playing for 30 minutes.

“It’s like two dinosaurs wrestling around. One likes to shoot threes and one likes to play in the paint,” said a smiling Taulava, 43.

The 40-year-old Pennisi likewise have nothing but respect for his old pal, who came a year ahead of him (1999) playing in Asia’s first ever play-for-pay league.

“Asi is always a warrior. He’s always tough in the post. It’s good (playing against him),” said the veteran big man.

All these years Pennisi haven’t changed at all, according to Taulava, a 2003 league MVP.

“Still the same old Mic with the dirty little tactics,” said the veteran back-up big man of Gilas 3.0. “But hey, that’s basketball for me. You just got to enjoy it and play.”

That’s exactly what Pennisi has been doing especially after inking a two-conference contract with the Energy.

“Shooter is still a shooter,” he said. “Still up playing basketball, play it right, and good things will happen,” he stressed.

“I still have to prove to the young guys that you’ve got to take my spot, but I won’t give it away. Definitely, I still have it and still a competitor.”
