Asi Taulava talks about feelers from PBA teams, Ginebra's 'awesome' lineup, and playing back-up to Fajardo

    Apr 8, 2014

MAN-mountain Asi Taulava has confirmed interest from at least two other teams, but said it is not from Ginebra - the ballclub which he has said in the past he dreams of playing for.

“Yeah, there are feelers. Boss Lito (Alvarez, Air21 governor) talks to me about it. But I try not to think about it much,” Taulava said, confirming a story by on Monday. “Yeah, feelers and stuff!”

The 41-year old slotman refused to divulge the names of the teams trying to lure him from Air21, but admitted he hasn't heard from Ginebra which, Taulava said, has an "awesome" lineup loaded with big guys and in all probability has no more need for him.

“I don’t think they need another big guy. They’re loaded with big guys. They have Greg (Slaughter), Japeth (slaughter), Jay-R (Reyes) and Billy (Mamaril). They have an awesome lineup,” he said.

Pressed on where he wants to go in the event of a move, Taulava said: “I am looking at teams that need another big guy and that is in contention and trying to make a run for a championship,” he said.

Asked if one of them is San Miguel Beer, Taulava neither confirmed nor denied.

“I think, Petron (now San Miguel Beer) is lacking a big guy. If they need my service, I am here,” he said with a laugh.

“I think June Mar (Fajardo) is working too hard. I think he needs some help down there. It showed in the last Philippine Cup playoffs,” the former PBA MVP said.

Taulava believed San Miguel has one of the most formidable rosters in the league today, except that it "lacks another big guy who can give Fajardo a breather."

The hard-banging former Gilas Pilipinas center said he has no qualms sliding down to a reliever’s role, all for the glory of seizing another championship.

“Whatever it takes to win, no one man is bigger than the team. Everybody has his part in the team and the ultimate goal is to win a championship. You can’t be picky,” he said.

“But don’t think I am underestimating Air21. I like our chances here. I love my teammates and how we play together. We got Rico (Villanueva), Aldrech Ramos and Sean Anthony. We’re also a formidable team,” he added.

Meanwhile, Taulava’s agent, Sheryl Reyes, reiterated to that they can't be any happier with how the Air 21 management has been appreciating Asi's value to the team.

“We are happy with how Boss Lito and Air21 are giving value and respect to Asi’s perseverance and contributions. We are so close to signing a new contract. And that’s three years,” said Reyes.

“Other teams may have sent us feelers, pero may iba kasi na parang hindi naniniwala or takot that Asi’s competitiveness might not last that long,” she added.

Asked about Taulava's dream of playing for Ginebra, which he wished for during his 40th birthday last year, Reyes said only time can tell.

“As of this time the Ginebra dream is not going to happen. As of this time, we’re signing na with Air21. But about him playing to Ginebra, we never know. Three years is a long time,” said Reyes.

“Right now, wala siyang spot sa Ginebra. Puno na eh. Pero if the team will work something out for him in the future, yun ang hindi natin alam,” she added. “Marami pang pwedeng mangyari di ba?”

“Asi, like that team (Ginebra), has the ‘never say die’ attitude, di ba? So we never know!”
