See Asi Taulava for the first time in his retro short shorts, body-hugging top

    Dec 2, 2014

ASI Taulava is ready to take PBA fans to a trip down memory lane.

Making good on his promise to Spin.ph a few days ago, the NLEX Road Warriors star has shown up for a PBA Philippine Cup game on Tuesday sporting the short shorts and body-hugging tank top reminiscent of the good old days of basketball.

“I told you, I will wear this. It’s a long-forgotten basketball stage that I want the present youngsters following the sport to be acquainted with,” said Taulava, a few minutes before tip-off of the Road Warriors game against the Barako Bull Energy at the Mall of Asia Arena.

But to lessen the risk of injury, Taulava has dropped his plan to complement his specially made retro jersey with the good old Chuck Taylors.

Instead, the former league MVP opted for his Nike Kobe 7 yin and yangs.

“My team is very supportive in my bid to wear the retro jersey especially (team manager) boss Ronald (Dulatre), so I don’t want to stress him out with the lowcut Chucks that obliges me not to wear protective tape,” he said.

“Again, I am doing this to bring back the good old days of basketball. Some sort of nostalgia for the 40 something and up just like me. Basketball was great and simple back then, but truly physical,” Taulava said.

Dulatre meanwhile explained his decision to give in to Taulava’s request of tailoring a new set of jersey just for him.

“He wants it, so we supported him. We just want to make Asi and his fans happy. Hopefully he continues to lead this team,” said Dulatre of one of his most consistent players.

Taulava bared that he will decide after tonight’s game if he’ll continue with his ‘throwback Tuesday’ and ‘flashback Friday’ attire.

“It depends on how the fans will react. But I’m sure they’ll love it. Let’s turn back the hands of time by going back to the glory days of Philippine basketball, we’re trying to write the golden age now. I swear,” he added.
