    Asi Taulava now top threat to Fajardo's quest for second 'Best Player' award

    JUNE Mar Fajardo remained on track for a second Best Player of the Conference plum after building his lead over new second placer Asi Taulava of Air21 in the statistical race at the end of the PBA Governors Cup eliminations.

    Powered by his conference-best numbers of 21.8 points and 16 rebounds, the 6-foot-10 Fajardo, who earned his first BPC award during the Philippine Cup, registered an average statistical points of 43.8, way ahead of the evergreen Taulava’s 37.9 points.

    The 6-foot-9 Taulava climbed to no. 2 at the end of the single-round eliminations after averaging 18.1 points, 12.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists while helping the Express reach the playoffs for the second straight time this season.

    Taulava won his only Best Player of the Conference plum during the 2003 All-Filipino conference while playing for Talk ‘N Text.

    Moving up to third spot in the BPC stats race is Meralco’s Fil-Am sophomore forward Cliff Hodge with 34.6 points, followed by Barangay Ginebra’s rookie center Greg Slaughter with 34.0 and Talk ‘N Text forward Ranidel de Ocanmpo’s 32.9.

    Rounding out the top 10 are Talk ‘N Text guard Jason Castro (30.3) in sixth spot, followed by GlobalPort’s Alex Cabagnot (29.4), reigning MVP and Beermen forward Arwind Santos (25.2), Alaska’s sweet-shooting guard JV Casio (24.) and San Mig Super Coffe’s Peter June Simon (23.8).
