Asi and Patrimonio feats recalled after Durant breaches 50-point mark

    Jan 19, 2013

KEVIN Durant scored a career-high 52 points on Saturday to lift the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 117-114 overtime victory over the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA.

Named as an All-Star Game starter for the Western Conference a day earlier, Durant went 5-of-9 from three-point range, 13-of-31 overall from the field and a perfect 21-of-21 from the free-throw line to record the first 50-point game and the highest output by any player in the current NBA season.

Durant’s career-game had some Twitter followers asking me who was the last player to score at least 50 points in a game in the PBA. The answer is Air21 import Zach Graham, who had 51 when the Express defeated Powerade, 128-121, on June 22 last year in a Governors Cup elimination-round game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Here is the boxscores of that game:

The last local player to score at least 50 points in a PBA game was Asi Taulava, who had a career-high 51 on May 16, 2004 when his team, Talk ‘N Text, routed Purefoods 131-105 also at the Big Dome in a 2004 Fiesta Conference elimination game.

Here is the boxscores of that game:

As for Durant’s going 21-of-21 from the free-throw line, only one player in PBA history has made at least 21 free throws without a miss in a game and that was Tanduay import Rob Williams, who went 23-of-23 en route to a 52-point performance on October 12, 1986 when the Rhum Masters beat Ginebra 114-109.

Don’t ask me for the boxscores of that game, though, as I was still a college student when that game was played.

Alvin Patrimonio, on the other hand, owns the record for the most number of free throws made in a game without a miss among locals, which he set on May 5, 1989 in scoring 40 points while going 16-of-16 from the stripe in Purefoods' 126-120 win over San Miguel Beer.
