SAN Miguel is enjoying a fine run in the eliminations, but veteran forward Arwind Santos is hoping to push the Beermen to work even harder because the fight gets much tougher as the Philippine Cup progresses.
The 33-year-old Santos is hoping the Beermen would be able to slay the ghost of the past season’s All Filipino tournament.
“Kailangan mas mapaganda pa namin at di yung sa eliminations lang namin nagagawa yun, kundi pati sa semis. Eh sa semis, mas importante na mas maganda ang ipakita namin,” explained the one-time PBA Most Valuable Player.
In last season’s Philippine Cup, San Miguel, then known as Petron, compiled an impressive 12-4 record after sweeping Barako Bull in the quarterfinals.
But the Boosters imploded in the semifinals, bowing to the shorter Rain or Shine Elasto Painters squad, 4-1.
Now San Miguel sits atop the standings with and 8-1 win-loss record and victory over Talk ’N Text (7-3) on Friday will give the Beermen an automatic semifinal spot. But santos knows that’s easier said than done.
“Kailangan mag-stay hungry kami, kasi kung nagu-umpisa pa lang, umaarangkada pa lang kami kaya kailangan maalagaan namin yun (strong start),” said Santos, who is averaging 15.7 points and 8.2 rebounds this conference.
“Sa ganda ng pinapakita namin, basta dire-diretso lang. Focus namin eh yung goal lang namin (of winning the championship),” he added.
