ARWIND Santos made up for a late appearance on Saturday night by providing a huge spark off the bench at the start of San Miguel Beer’s breakaway in its 111-98 win over Rain or Shine in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
The SMB star arrived after tipoff due to traffic, but immediately made his presence felt as he scored all his 13 points in the second quarter where the Beermen outscored the Elasto Painters, 31-21, that set the tone for the blowout.
Santos explained he was eager to do well right away to avoid disrupting SMB’s progress against the E-Painters as he checked in with 39 seconds left in the first quarter with his team up by just three points.
“Mahihiya ka sa ganda ng samahan, wag mo sirain,” Santos said after the game. “Gusto mong pangalagaan, yun yung nangyayari sa team namin ngayon. Pinapangalagaan namin yung bawat isa.”
“Ayaw namin yung isa sa amin maging dahil para masira yung team,” he added. “Kasi ang ganda nung samahan eh, so yun ang nagiging bread and butter kaya ganito, nandito kami sa five-zero.
“Sana kahit anong dumating na pagsubok, kung matalo man kami ng ilang beses, sana dire diretso namin,” he continued.
Santos, who shot 6-of-10 from the field and completed his effort with two boards, two assists, one steal, and one block in 19 minutes off the bench, blamed his tardiness to the traffic caused by the closure of a part of Roxas Boulevard owing to Aliwan Festival, an annual cultural show.
“Sobrang traffic tapos ang alam kong call time ay 5 pm, relax na relax pa akong nagda-drive kanina tapos nalaman ko 3 pala call time,” Santos admitted with a smile. “Ayun, mabuti na lang umabot ako at tsaka hindi nagalit lahat.”
“Naalala ko nung may kasalanan ako dati nung mababa yung grade ko, para ‘di magalit nanay at tatay ko, pupunuin ko yung timba at drums, iigiban mo, para at least di masyadong punahin yung pagkakamali mo,” he added. “Yung kanina kaya sobrang thank you na nakapag perform rin ako, naka-ambag ako.”
