NORTHPORT coach Pido Jarencio said new recruit Arwind Santos has been a positive influence on the Batang Pier with his leadership and the things that he can still do on the court.

Jarencio said he looks forward to seeing Santos finally play in an official game for NorthPort since being acquired in a trade for Vic Manuel, having observed how the team responded to the veteran star during the midseason break.

“Arwind blended well with the original players ng NorthPort,” said Jarencio on the eve of opening day where the Batang Pier will see action against Alaska.

“Okay naman siya. Walang masasabi kasi he is a winner. He is a leader. Sumusunod naman ‘yung players sa kanya. Kaya ‘yung experience and ‘yung nalalaman niya, malaking bagay ‘yun.”

Santos, 40, was acquired by NorthPort in a shock trade that sent Vic Manuel to San Miguel after the Batang Pier received Manuel in a separate transaction with Phoenix Super LPG for Sean Anthony.

Santos will immediately get an opportunity to get his feet wet in the opening game against the Aces on Wednesday, 3 p.m. at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

In his final conference with the Beermen where he spent the last 12 years of his career, Santos averaged 12.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks, proving that he still has what it takes to make an impact in a game at his age.

Jarencio said Santos’ role hasn’t really changed from the time he was with San Miguel as he still expects the former Far Eastern University star to provide scoring, rebounding, and defense, while also serving as one of the leaders of the young team.

“All-around naman si Arwind. Hindi lang din sa basketball, outside basketball, magaling makisama. Kaya walang specific role kundi all-around si Arwind na makakatulong sa team," said the NorthPort coach.

"At the same time, inembrace ng team si Arwind. Excited lahat na nakasama nila si Arwind."

Santos joined a NorthPort squad that, incidentally, lost to SMB in the quarterfinals of the Philippine Cup, but made waves in the conference nevertheless with Robert Bolick, Jamie Malonzo, and Greg Slaughter leading the charge.

NorthPort also brought former Portland State standout Cameron Forte as its import for the Governors’ Cup.

Jarencio said he felt the excitement of the players having Santos around, knowing how the former PBA MVP has proven himself to be a winner in his entire career.

“Inspired sila. Si Arwind, nine championships hawak niya. Mahirap pantayan ‘yan," said Jarencio. "Si Arwind, makikita mong winner talaga. He knows how to win, he knows how to talk to the players, he knows how to motivate them as a teammate.

"Kaya inspired ‘yung mga player na sumama sa journey ni Arwind,” added Jarencio.
