ARWIND Santos is grateful for achieving another milestone in his PBA career.
At the same time, he’s pleased to see San Miguel notch another win in the Philippine Cup on the night the veteran forward became only the eight player in league annals to record a total of 800 block shots.
Santos complemented June Mar Fajardo’s monster game of 40 points and 19 rebounds with another brilliant display of defensive game in the Beermen’s 113-107 victory over NorthPort Batang Pier Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The former league MVP finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, an assist, and most importantly the block shot – against rookie Robert Bolick – that allowed him to join an elite group of PBA big men.
“Siyempre kapag kailangan ng blocks, kailangan nananalo. Hindi yung marami ka ngang blocks, kaya lang natatalo,” said Santos after the win that formalized the Beermen’s entry into the quarterfinals with their 6-3 record and fourth straight victory overall.
Santos became the only active player to reach 800 blocks as the seven previous ahead of him had all been retired, namely Ramon Fernandez, Philip Cezar, Abet Guidaben, Manny Victorino, Benjie Paras, Jerry Codinera, and Marlou Aquino.
The former Far Eastern University King Tamaraw believes he can still reach the 900-block plateau within the next three seasons.
“Ang ikinakatuwa ko hindi pa naman ako tapos maglaro, so puwede pang umangat ng kaunti,” he said.
“Maliban diyan, siyempre gusto ko pa rin every game makakatulong ako o makaka-contribute ako ng blocks. Why not, mas ok yun.”
Other than eyeing to register 900 blocks, winning a championship, a fifth straight All-Filipino crown at that, remains Santos’ primary goal.
“Yung champion talaga ng All-Filipino, yun talaga ang gusto naming ma-straight kung maaari. Yun ang pinaka-goal dun,” he added.
