SAN Miguel played without injured stars Arwind Santos and Terrence Romeo on Friday in its PBA Commissioner’s Cup game against Blackwater.
Romeo was out for the third straight outing owing to an Achilles injury, while Santos has a sprained thumb on his shooting hand which he suffered in the Beermen’s loss to TnT Katropa last week.
SMB coach Leo Austria said Romeo may likely miss some more games, although Santos could be back for the team’s Sunday game against Barangay Ginebra.
“Si Terrence two more week pa before he can start practicing,” said Austria following the Beermen’s 127-106 win over the Blacwater Elite on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
“Si Arwind hindi siya maka-grip ng bola,” added Austria of Santos’ condition. “But he told us maybe Sunday he will be OK.”
San Miguel according to Austria, is treating the injuries to its players with utmost care, citing the case of the Golden State Warriors when superstar Kevin Durant, not yet in the best of shape coming off a strained right calf injury, forced himself to play in Game 5 of the NBA Finals only to go down with a ruptured right Achilles.
“Alam ninyo naman pagdating sa mga injuries very careful kami. And this are good decisions for us,” said Austria.
“Nakita ninyo naman sa NBA, pinipilit maglaro, so mahirap yun,” he added. “Players should be the ones to decide kasi sila ang nakakaramdam niyan, e. And kami we always give them the benefit of the doubt because that’s their career.”
The absence of Santos and Romeo left the Beermen with just a 12-man lineup since Ronald Tubid and Kelly Nabong are still serving the three-game suspension meted on them in the aftermath of the ‘Spiderman’ case.
Nabong and Tubid however, are expected to be back for San Miguel (1-2) against Ginebra.
