REIGNING PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Arwind Santos was lost for words following Petron’s embarrassing 93-112 loss to San Mig Super Coffee on Wednesday night that dampened the Boosters’ shot at a top two finish heading into the PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup playoffs.
The 6-foot-4 Santos admitted it’s as if there was a death in the family inside the team dugout shortly after the loss – the worst defeat for the franchise with big man June Mar Fajardo playing.
“Kasi medyo tahimik kanina eh. Di namin maintindihan ano nangyayari. Bawat isa kanina tahimik,” explained the lanky forward who had a quiet 12 points and 12 rebounds in a game where the Boosters were soundly beaten by the Mixers.
But Santos deflected insinuations that Fajardo’s return after a three-game absence due to a knee injury was disruptive for the team.
“Malabong rason yun,” Santos said, referring to Fajardo’s second game back from an MCL sprain on his right knee.
“Alam mo naman si June Mar, malaki naitutulong. Maganda nga nandiyan si June Mar. Para sa akin, di rason si June Mar bakit kami natalo,” stressed the former Far Eastern University star.
Instead, Santos mentioned Petron’s breakdown on defense as early as the first period and the team’s failure to execute its plays as the major culprits for the 19-point blowout suffered by the Boosters.
“Ang defense namin against San Mig, di ganun ka-solid. Iba ang offense namin kasi di namin natakbo. Siguro dahil sa maganda din ang defense nila (Mixers),” explained Santos.
Still, Santos said all is not lost for Petron.
With the Boosters already assured of a quarterfinal slot with their 9-4 record, Santos said they will just have to take care of business come Saturday when they face the Meralco Bolts and hope for a better placing in the playoffs from there.
