AFTER San Miguel Beer sank deeper into the cellar with its 107-100 loss to Alaska on Tuesday, coach Leo Austria said they are set to activate two-time Best Import Arizona Reid in the Beermen’s next game against the Meralco Bolts.
Austria said the import-change was something the Beermen felt they needed to do after failing to get any kind out of their current post-championship funk with reinforcement Ronald Roberts.
“AZ (Reid’ nickname) will play on our next game against Meralco,” Austria said after being holed out in the team’s dugout for almost an hour.
“Supposed to be, he’s our import for the third conference, but the situation needs him and maybe we can improve our decision-making from there.”
The 56-year-old San Miguel mentor felt at this point, all the Beermen need is someone who could infuse leadership, which he believes Reid can provide.
“Iyung kanyang (Reid) leadership and yung intelligence niya madadala niya dito,” explained Austria after the team dropped to 0-4 overall in the tournament.
Reid is not new in the PBA, having guided Rain or Shine to a runner-up finish in last season’s Governors Cup.
This will actually be his fourth tour of duty in the PBA.
The former High Point standout will start practicing with the Beermen on Wednesday and make his debut in a San Miguel uniform on Saturday when they play unbeaten Meralco in Cagayan de Oro City.
Roberts played his last game for the Beermen on Tuesday, finishing with 24 points, 14 rebounds and two assists in 42 minutes.
