TNT Katropa is reinforcing not only its roster, but its coaching staff as well.
Sandy Arespacochaga has jumped ship from NLEX and will now be part of the Katropa coaching staff under head coach Bong Ravena and adviser Mark Dickel.
Arespacochaga’s transfer came as Eric Gonzales has reportedly TNT, leaving ex-NBA player Alton Lister as the only remnant from the staff of former coach Nash Racela.
Also gone from the team are former Racela assistant coaches Josh Reyes and Ryan Betia.
Another addition to the TnT coaching staff is Yuri Escueta, also a deputy coach at Ateneo like Arespacochaga.
Arespacochaga had his last practice with the Road Warriors on Dec. 22, where he took the opportunity to say goodbye to the players and the entire staff.
Despite Arespacochaga's exit, NLEX coach Yeng Guiao still has a number of deputies including veterans Adonis Tierra and Jojo Lastimosa, Jonas Jaime Mendoza, Claiford Arao, and Ervin Sotto.
Arespacochaga’s transfer was done upon the advice of former national coach Tab Baldwin, SPIN.ph learned from sources. The American coach had Arespacochaga as his top assistant at Ateneo where they won back-to-back UAAP men’s basketball titles.
Dickel is a former player of Baldwin with the New Zealand national team.
The TnT stint will actually be a homecoming for the former Ateneo Blue Eagle. He previously served as assistant during the time of Norman Black and only left the ballclub when the champion mentor went over to Meralco. Arespacochaga was later transferred to NLEX.
Ironically, Arespacochaga will immediately face his former team as the Road Warriors play the Katropa in a tune-up game on Saturday at the Moro Lorenzo gym.
