BACOLOD – Apple David will be looking to capture her second straight title in the Shooting Stars side event in the PBA All-Star on Sunday at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum.
The team of Sports5’s courtside reporter that also included Sen. Bong Go and Inquirer sports scribe Jonas Terrado will try to make it back-to-back after they won last year’s event in memorable fashion.
David will be battling fellow courtside reporters Bea Escudero and Belle Gregorio.
David sealed the win for her team by making a long-distance shot in an underhand manner on the first try to the cheers of the Passi fans.
In recalling her experience last year, David said the underhand shot was unplanned but felt like she needed to attempt in such a manner to have a chance at making one.
“Aminin na natin, chamba talaga ‘yun,” said David with a smile. “Initially, ang sabi ko talaga, umabot lang ‘yung tira sa ring. Kapag ganun (overhand) kasi, hindi umaabot sa ring.”
“Sabi ko nga, daig ng masuwerte ‘yung magagaling. Kasi ‘yung iba naming nakalaban, atleta, naglalaro. Eh tayo, competitive. ‘Yun na lang actually ang nilaban ko, competitiveness,” she added.
David recalled that she never practiced the underhand shot prior to last year’s event.
“Nakakahiya kasi mag-practice na ganun. Parang decision lang ‘yun right there and then. Iniisip ko lang kung paano umabot ‘yung bola sa ring… Bahala na,” said David.
David is flattered that some fans consider her shot as the most unforgettable during the Passi All-Star event. But at the same time, David admitted that there is also a bit of a pressure to defend the crown.
“Nakakataba ng puso na side event lang tayo but somehow, it made a big impact. And at the same time, nakaka-pressure because I get a chance to defend this year. Pressure na masundan ‘yun or ma-defend ‘yun. But at the same time, it’s a good motivation,” said David.
“At the end of the day, gusto lang naman natin mag-enjoy at magbigay ng saya sa mga nanonood sa atin,” said David.
