Andre Emmett says Meralco's win over Ginebra is 'whole lot of heart, whole lot of passion, and whole lot of teamwork'

    Jun 14, 2015

ANDRE Emmett deflected credit to his teammates for Meralco’s hard-earned 102-99 win over Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Sunday night.

While he scored 12 points in the payoff period, including two on the runner that put the Bolts on top for good, the prolific import felt he couldn’t have bailed his team out if not for his teammates who gave them cushion to weather a late Kings’ rally.

“Our guys stepped,” said Emmett, who finished with 34 points, four boards, and four assists in 42 minutes. “We had some moments where we fell off for a little bit. But we kept fighting until there was zero on the clock.”

Three locals in particular sparked the Bolts in the fourth quarter.

Gary David scored eight of his 10 points in the period, including three on a trey that made it 91-84 for Meralco with a little over seven minutes to go, while Cliff Hodge buried his own contested top-of-the-key triple that gave the Bolts a 97-92 lead with 3:23 left.

Defensively, Reynel Hugnatan, an undersized big man, also did an admirable job shadowing the 6-foot-11 Greg Slaughter, who was held to two points after scoring 19 in the first three quarters.

“It was a whole lot of heart, whole lot of passion, whole lot of teamwork and fighting together,” Emmett said. “When you have all that combined, you got to win.”

As a result, the Bolts climbed to a tie for fifth spot with Rain or Shine after jacking up their win-loss record to 5-4.
