MYCHAL Ammons and Robert Bolick carried NorthPort to a 99-94 win over Rain or Shine in an auspicious debut in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Batang Pier led by as many as 24 points before Ammons and Bolick combined a fiery Rain or Shine comeback in the fourth period.
Ammons finished with 25 points and 19 rebounds while Bolick added 20 points in his first game with NorthPort since playing for Gilas Pilipinas in the Fiba World Cup in China.
“A win is a win,” said NorthPort coach Pido Jarencio. “Medyo pangit ang ending. Hindi mo rin puwede ibalewala ‘yung kabilang team. Marunong din mag-shoot ‘yan at nagtu-turnover kami. Ganun ang basketball eh.”
“Sabi nga nila, happy ending,” said Jarencio.
The Batang Pier began to pull away after breaking an 11-11 tie with a 12-2 run to end the first period on top, 29-13. The trend continued in the second quarter with Bolick scoring 10 in the first half for a 58-38 advantage.
Ammons kept the momentum going and his three-point play padded NorthPort’s lead to 70-46, the biggest in the game.
Rey Nambatac exploded late in the fourth and helped trim the Rain or Shine deficit to four points, 91-87, with 2:35 left, but Ammons hit a difficult fallaway jumper and Bolick hit four straight points to douse the rally.
Joel Wright had 22 points and 14 rebounds in his Rain or Shine debut while Nambatac finished with 19 points.
