VISITING American shooting coach David Nurse said he is enjoying every minute of his stay in Manila, thanks to the world-famous Filipino hospitality of his host - Tim Cone and family.
In the country to conduct shooting clinics for PBA players and other top college and commercial teams, Nurse bared he is a house guest of the Cones for the whole duration of his two-week stay in the Philippines.
“He’s an awesome host. We got some good dinners already. I love the food here in the Philippines," the top shooting doctor said of his host. "He’s not just the best coach I know, he’s one of the best persons I know.”
Nurse is well-known as one of the deadliest shooters in the world, holding the record for the most numbers of three-pointers made in the 45-second, 60-second and five-minute time challenge.
The boyish-looking former Kearney High School standout bared how Cone and his wife Cris have been pampering him with some of the best food he has ever tasted.
“I just got here but I am enjoying my stay. The food here is nice, awesome, man, much better than in the United States,” Nurse said as he can't stop talking about the locally made coffee brew, kapeng barako.
Cone and Nurse met recently during the NBA Summer League games and the Purefoods coach offered his home in case the shooting doctor needed a place to stay during his Manila visit.
The PBA's most successful coach said he knows only one way to treat guests.
“I am Pinoy eh,” said the Purefoods coach. “He needs a place to stay, he stays with me. He’s a basketball guy. He does his stuff around the city and he said he’s coming to Asia, so I said, 'If you need somewhere to stay, stay with me.'”
Cone bared that his wife Cris have been preparing Filipino dishes for Nurse which they mesh with American meals.
“We had pancit last night for dinner, but it’s pancit with an American meal, (but we plan) to give him more Pinoy dishes going,” he said.
Among the food Cone wants to prepare for his American guest are adobo, dinuguan, sinigang and other popular mainstream Filipino viands.
“My wife cooks all kinds of things, my kids are really into Filipino food. They eat almost anything, bangus, dinuguan and all the Filipino food,” said the 18-time champion coach.

“I think he can coach at any level he wants, he’s one of the sharpest and smartest people I have ever met, I am honored to stay with him,” he said.
Asked what he thought of Filipino players after holding shooting clinics for Barako Bull, Purefoods, San Miguel, Ginebra and La Salle, Nurse expressed amazement.
“You got some good players and I am impressed by what I see in practices I visited,” Nurse said while pinpointing James Yap as one of the best pure shooters he has seen in the country.
“I tell you, your league, the PBA, is one of the coolest leagues I’ve seen. The passion for basketball here from the fans, unbelievable,” he said.
