WHILE Greg Slaughter flashed a smile, Allen Durham hardly showed any emotion as they posed for photos with Commissioner Chito Narvasa after winning the top two individual awards for the PBA Governors’ Cup on Sunday night.
Their faces didn’t change after the game as Ginebra scored an 86-76 win over Meralco to take a 2-0 lead in the series.
Durham was definitely not in the mood to celebrate when reminded that he won the Best Import award for the second straight year.
“That happened – I won it back-to-back,” Durham said after coming out of the dugout. “That’s about it.”
The do-it-all reinforcement showed why he deserved to be the Best Import for the second successive tournament as he churned out 25 points on 9-of-18 shooting, 22 boards, seven assists, and two steals in almost 41 minutes – only to end up with their second straight loss.
“It (loss) spoiled a little bit of everything,” Durham said. “When you play good for 44 minutes, and then we come out with a loss, it’s kind of hard to take.
“We played a lot better, but down the stretch, we didn’t execute,” he added. “We missed our free throws at crucial moments. I think the officials made some questionable calls at crucial moments, but that’s in the past. We got to focus on Game 3 and get that win, find a way to get that win on Wednesday.”
Durham still saw some positives on Sunday night after getting blown out in the series opener, 102-87, last Friday in Lucena.
“We played a whole lot better than Game One,” Durham said. “I think everybody was focused. We had a six-point lead in the fourth quarter. (But) you got to be able pull a win out when you got a lead on a good team like that.”
“I think we played a lot better on defense,” he added. “We made it a lot tougher for Brownlee and LA and Greg. They just made some big plays down the stretch and I think that was the deciding factor.”
Durham said the Bolts can't afford another meltdown in Game Three on Wednesday.
“You got to move forward,” the American workhorse said. “Good thing is we’re not too deep in the hole. We still can come back. But we got to win on Wednesday.”
