ANTIPOLO City – Despite the harrowing turnaround to its PBA Commissioner’s Cup campaign, coach Alex Compton still feels Alaska can right the boat and get back in contention for the mid-season conference championship.

Compton said there should be no excuses for the Aces’ turnstile that saw them lead the league at one point during their four-game winning streak to start the tournament, to teetering on the verge of being eliminated for a playoffs berth with their current six-game losing streak.

“I don’t believe there are any excuses and I know people perceive I am not making excuses,” he said as the Aces’ absorbed a 109-97 beating at the hands of San Miguel Beer Saturday night at the Ynares Sports Center here as key players Calvin Abueva and JVee Casio sat out the game due to injuries.

It didn’t help any that the Aces last two games in the eliminations are against the current top two teams in the Beermen (no.2 in a tie with Ginebra) and the Star Hotshots (no.1), who they meet for their final elimination round assignment on Wednesday as they try to stay alive for the last two quarterfinal berths available.

Compton lamented the situation couldn’t have gone this worse for his team had Alaska didn’t lose winnable games against Barangay Ginebra, TnT KaTropa, and even against NLEX.

“We didn’t get it done. We didn’t play better, and now we’re down to our last variant,” said the Alaska coach of the Aces’ situation.

But he still sees a glimmer of hope for the franchise, especially if the other teams still in contention for a playoffs slot fail to get the job done.

“Sometimes a slimmer, a glimmer of hope are all you need. And sometimes good fortune comes in strange packages from strange people,” he said. “Right now we hope to get fortune come from us taking care of business, and then a little help from some of our friends."

    “And that’s where it’s at.”
