COACH Alex Compton was left to rue his decision not to call a timeout late in a 101-92 defeat at the hands of a spirited Barangay Ginebra squad on Tuesday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Compton pointed to the early goings of the fourth quarter when Ginebra went on an 11-4 run. He considered calling a quick timeout to stop the bleeding, but in the end let his players play through that stretch.

It was a decision he regreted as Alaska never got back in the game after that.

“I think at times, it was my fault. I didn’t want to call a timeout because I felt like we can just work through it because we’re trying to make many plays on one end too quick,” explained the Philippine-born American coach.

The 40-year-old Compton felt his coaching boo-boo cost the Aces the game, putting their shot at an automatic semifinal seat in jeopardy.

“It’s like we want to make one play, but it’s not what we empathize and not what we’ve done all season. And because of that, we’ re forcing too many early plays and getting many turnovers,” he said.

The Aces turned the ball over 20 times in the game, six more than their conference average.

With Alaska dropping to second spot at 8-2 behind solo leader San Miguel’s 8-1 record, Compton said their game on Friday against Rain or Shine will be critical.

“We knew even if we won this game, but if we lose to Rain or shine, halos pareho lang din,” he said.

“But while this loss hurts, we got to move on and step up, so Friday is more like a quarterfinal game (against Rain or Shine). But that would be fun,” added Compton.

“I’ll just see how the guys respond.”
