ALASKA coach Alex Compton is confident Calvin Abueva will regain his spot in the Gilas Pilipinas lineup in the future in the wake of the Aces star’s exclusion from the current pool for the second window of the Fiba World Cup qualifiers next month.

Gilas coach Chot Reyes recently announced they have dropped Abueva and Rain or Shine’s Raymond Almazan from his pool for missing the first few practices of the national pool.

Compton said he respects Reyes’ decision.

“I think Chot’s proven himself in the international realm,” Compton said in a short chat with SPIN.ph after practice on Thursday. “He knows what he’s doing with Gilas and he has his reasons.”

“And I’m sure Calvin’s good enough to make the team again,” he added. “I actually spoke to him about it. As soon as I found out, I called coach Chot, and there was nothing new that he told me that he hadn’t said in the media. And he said that it doesn’t mean that Calvin’s out of the pool forever.”

Compton insisted he’s not aware of the reason behind Abueva’s absences from the national team, stressing they have released 'The Beast' and Carl Bryan Cruz to the pool.

“I didn’t know about that (the reason of Abueva missing Gilas practices),” Compton said. “Bryan’s there. We had nothing to do (with that).”

Abueva was also absent from Alaska practice on Thursday. The Aces energizer bunny also skipped practice on Wednesday, but attended the viewing session first.

“He’s taking care of some family stuff,” Compton said of Abueva, who played in their last game against Ginebra and provided his usual spark, finishing with nine points, nine boards, five assists, two steals, and two blocks in 20 minutes as a starter.

Asked if he’ll play on Saturday against Blackwater, Compton is optimistic.

“We hope so,” Compton said. “I believe he’ll be here tomorrow. We’ll see.”
