Compton glad ‘beast mode’ for Abueva now means monster numbers and not wild games

    Dec 24, 2014

ALEX Compton said Alaska forward Calvin Abueva deserves a pat in the back for keeping his emotions under control so far in the PBA Philippine Cup.

The Aces are very much in the hunt for a Finals berth in the all-Filipino conference, and undeniably, it has a lot to do with the energy and hustle that Abueva has been providing.

“All conference long, obviously, he’s second in statistical points. He’s been great and I think he’s been a lot more under control,” Compton told

Despite standing just a shade above 6-1, Abueva plays like a legitimate big man beating taller players in rebounding, while providing the defensive spunk that has benefited the Aces greatly since being selected second overall by the Uytengsu franchise in 2014.

“Everybody talks about how he has matured, but that’s mainly Calvin who has done that and how he has controlled his emotions,” added the 40-year-old American coach.

Abueva, who earned the moniker “the Beast” during college at San Sebastian, was in beast mode again on Monday, posting in a PBA career-high 28 points along with 14 rebounds, three steals and an assist to lead Alaska to a 94-78 thumping of Rain or Shine.

The win put Alaska back to the driver’s seat at 2-1 in their semifinal series.

Compton hopes the Alaska undersized forward could continue dishing off the same output as the Aces eye a commanding 3-1 lead against the Elasto Painters on Christmas Day at the Mall of Asia Arena.
