LEO Austria is uncertain if top San Miguel point guard Alex Cabagnot would be ready when the team resumes its campaign in the PBA Philippine Cup in the first week of 2017.
The reigning champions will be up against Blackwater on January 6 followed by a game against Barangay Ginebra two days later in crucial games where the Beermen badly needs the services of Cabagnot, according to Austria.
The veteran playmaker suffered a nose injury on Wednesday night during the team's 101-86 rout of Meralco after he was tackled by Cliff Hodge while going to the basket.
The latest medical bulletin issued by team manager Gee Abanilla said Cabagnot suffered a depressed nasal fracture.
Abanilla said doctors administered inflammatory medicines on the injured San Miguel player. His condition will be re-assessed after three days, the SMB official added.
"We will know in three days," said Abanilla when asked if Cabagnot will have to go under the knife to repair the broken nose.
"It's still swollen now so it has to subside first," he added.
Given the situation, Austria doubts Cabagnot's availability for the Beermen's game against the Elite.
"Depende kung makakabalik siya sa next game namin," he said.
"It's back to back," Austria noted of San Miguel's playing schedule to open the new year.
He only hopes the coming eight-day break will help Cabagnot recover quickly from the injury.
"I hope this coming break will be helping the team, " said Austria, whose team sits on top of the standings with a 5-1 record going to the New Year break.
