ALEX Cabagnot showed his dedication on Saturday night by delivering at the crunchtime for San Miguel Beer just hours after getting discharged from the hospital due to feeling under the weather since the eve of Game Five against Ginebra.
The SMB star bared he initially didn’t inform his situation to the coaches when he was confined Medical City at 10 p.m. on Friday night before getting released at 11 a.m. on gameday.
“I was just puking and releasing, you know how it is,” Cabagnot revealed. “I checked myself at 10 p.m. and I stayed there, I was confined ‘til 11 a.m. so I just really wanted to help the team.”
“I didn't want to say it in the beginning because you know, I don't want any excuses if we win or lose,” he added.
The lefty combo guard did look like someone who was sick as he made just five of his 14 shots for 35.7-percent shooting.
But 35-year-old hit his last two shots that mattered most in back-to-back plays, the first a layup that was blocked, but eventually counted on a goaltending that put the Beermen up for good, 96-94, then a tough short jumper that gave them a two-possession lead.
The six-time champion, who finished with 12 points, five boards, five assists, two steals, and just one turnover in almost 42 minutes as a starter, did credit their bench for also stepping up.
“We're stepping up from the status quo that we've given each player,” Cabagnot said. “Even though they're coming off the bench, that doesn't mean they're less of a talent than the first stringers, it's just the situation pero I love how everybody is stepping up.”
“Everybody could be a (starter) on any given day,” he added. “It's a tribute to their disposition that they can come off the bench and still produce. I love how they're mentally engaged through every game.”
Apart from the bench support, Cabagnot is about to enjoy some rest as they await the winner of the other semifinal pairing between Magnolia and NLEX.
“Personally, it's (rest) very important to me, get home and just get rejuvenated,” Cabagnot said. “You guys know naman that if a series is going on, we can still do more scouting, we could prepare more intensely and just get mentally focused and engaged in every single aspect or facets of the other two teams.”
