IT takes the Final Four to bring out the best in Alex Cabagnot.
After averaging just two points, two rebounds, five assists, and no turnover in 30 minutes of action in the PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinals against Meralco, the San Miguel Beer playmaker flashed his vintage form in Game One of the semifinals against Rain or Shine on Thursday night.
Cabagnot tallied 15 points on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, 11 in the second half, eight assists, five boards, and one steal in 30 minutes as he sparked the Beermen’s comeback from 24 points down.
“I have to give credit to my players especially Alex Cabagnot,” Beermen coach Leo Austria said. “For the first time, after a so-so performance before this game, finally nakita namin yung kanyang true worth.”
Of course, this is the semifinals, baby.
“We have to step up our energy level and just play semifinals basketball,” said Cabagnot, who fired 11 of his output in the second half.
Two of his three-pointers spelled a huge a difference as one gave the Beermen the lead at 80-79 with two second left in the third, before the second put SMB on top anew, 95-93, with 5:02 remaining in the game.
Expect the veteran point guard to step up his energy level in the following games of the best-of-five series.
“Game One has its own intensity and Game Two has its own intensity and it just increases,” Cabagnot said. “It’s never like a plateau. You got to pick it up where you can. God shone on me today and He gave me a great game. Hopefully He shines on not just me, but the whole team.”
