ALASKA clinched a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals after a 95-85 win over NorthPort on Sunday in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Aces finished the elimination round with an 8-3 record, regaining their winning ways following a loss to NLEX last Friday to secure the second twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals.
Mike Harris had 27 points and 25 rebounds as the Aces weathered Batang Pier’s upset bid with a 14-0 fourth-quarter run to take control.
Compton said a halftime pep talk by team owner Wilfred Uytengsu was the spark for the team.
“It was short. It was powerful and the guys responded. I’ll leave it at that,”
A triple by JVee Casio started out that critical Alaska run to tie the game in response to NorthPort’s 8-0 run that put the Batang Pier ahead by three.
Kevin Racal hit a triple, while Harris converted a three-point play as Alaska took an 89-78 lead.
The loss spoiled Rashad Woods’ 33-point, 13-rebound outing for the Batang Pier, who finished the elimination round with a 2-9 win-loss slate.
