BLAME Alaska’s rust partly to a change in practice venue on the eve of Game One of the PBA Governors’ Cup Finals against San Miguel Beer.
Aces coach Alex Compton bared his team had to transfer to Reyes Gym in Mandaluyong on Thursday after leaks on the roof of the Hoops Center, their usual practice facility, left one side of the court wet and only one side available for two days.
“Couple of practices, instead of running and doing our normal, intense stuff, we had a limited gym. We couldn’t really practice,” Compton said in chat with Spin.ph after practice as his team returned to Hoops Center the day after the Aces suffered a 108-78 beating in the opener of the best-of-seven series.
The American tactician pondered if it affected their performance, but refused to make it as an alibi.
“I really have no idea, but I think that’s not an excuse,” Compton said. “It’s the finals, so you shouldn’t be flat.”
Still, the Aces came out sluggish from the get-go and never recovered as they wound up on the wrong side of the most lopsided finals game in seven years.
“The most disappointing thing for me was I really felt they (Beermen) clearly had superior energy, which was surprising,” Compton said.
“But medyo ginamit na namin ang aming mga WD-40 para wala ng kalawang,” the affable mentor was quick to add. “Sana okay na. Medyo fluid na sana.”
