CEBU City – Alaska survived a gritty Barangay Ginebra side in overtime, 101-95, to arrange a showdown with Petron for the championship of the 2013 Sinulog Cup at the Cebu Coliseum on Friday night.
Home hero Cyrus Baguio came to the Aces’ rescue in the extra period when he scored six of his 19 points, including the team’s last four points that sealed Alaska’s second straight win in the four-team pocket tournament.
The Aces will now meet the Boosters in the title game on Saturday also at the Cebu Coliseum. Both teams are unbeaten in two outings after Petron routed M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala, 94-68, in the first game.
Veteran Tony De La Cruz sent the game into overtime when he drained a pressure-packed three pointer in the final 1.2 seconds of regulation to tie the score at 89-89.
The Aces took control in the extra period, but the Kings kept on coming back at them, threatening for the last time at 95-94.
But import Robert Dozier came through with a monster slam to trigger a closing 6-1 Alaska run, which Baguio capped by scoring four straight points to put the fight away.
It was the second close win for the Aces in the meet after escaping past the Cebu Ninos in the opener, 83-81.
Dozier and super rookie Calvin Abueva each had 18 points to lead the Aces.
Helterbrand paced Ginebra with 23 points while import Herbert Hill added 18.
The loss was the second straight for the Kings.
