THE Alaska Aces, whose bid to bring back former Best Import Robert Dozier fell through, has decided to sign DJ Covington, a noted defensive specialist during his college days with the Virginia Military Institute.

Alaska coach Alex Compton confirmed that the 24-year-old Covington will be joining the team.

Covington, listed at 6 feet 9 inches, won the Big South Defensive Player of the Year in 2013 and 2014, averaging 20 points and close to 10 rebounds as a senior for the VMI Keydets.

Undrafted in the NBA in 2014, Covington went on to play for Basic-Fit Brussels in Belgium in May last year.

The athletic Covington is expected to easily fit within the defensive scheme of Alaska coach Alex Compton, whose team ranked as the second best in defense in the PBA Philippine Cup.

The Aces trail San Miguel Beer in the Philippine Cup Finals, 2-3 and will try to forge a winner-take-all match when they meet in Game Six on Sunday.

The Aces settled for Covington after Dozier, who led them to the 2013 Commissioner's Cup title, decided to stay with Al Shabab in Dubai.
