SUDDENLY Alaska has to scramble for another import less than three weeks before the PBA Governors Cup kicks off.
Branden Dawson exceeded the 6-foot-5 height limit for the season-ending tournament after being officially measured at the league office on Monday as per a report by the PBA official website.
Dawson of Michigan State was twice measured and both result showed he’s ¼ over the projected height limit.
The measurement was made in the presence of new coach Jeff Cariaso and his staff.
With Dawson deemed ineligible to play, the Aces now have to burn the lines and try to sign an import on short notice, with the final conference of the season set to kick off on Sept. 20.
Dawson was the choice of the new coaching staff to reinforce the team after nixing earlier plans of bringing back last year’s Best Import Mike Harris.
The 36-year-old Harris steered the Aces to the finals of last season’s Governors Cup, only to lose against the Magnolia Hotshots in six games of the finals.
Alex Compton initially eyed Harris to have another tour of duty with the Aces until he was replaced by Jeff Cariaso two weeks ago.
As it is, Alaska is the only team without an import yet.
The rest of the field already have their respective reinforcements - Romeo Travis (Magnolia), Justine Brownlee (Barangay Ginebra), Allen Durham (Meralco), Eugene Phelps (Phoenix), Olu Ashaolu (NLEX), Mychal Ammons (NorthPort), Joel Wright (Rain or Shine), Khapri Alston (Columbian Dyip), Aaron Fuller (Blackwater), Dez Wells (San Miguel Beer), and KJ McDaniels (TnT Katropa).
