WITH pressure at its highest, Alaska assistant coach Louie Alas is expecting a mental battle with defending champion San Miguel when the two teams go at it one last time on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Aces assistant coach Louie Alas admitted numbers and statistics are definitely out of the equation as the PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven championship series goes down to one final game.
“Ninety percent niyan mental na, 10 percent na lang ang physical,” said Alas, who himself is nothing new to winner-take-all showdowns.
“Technically, ano pa ba ang ituturo mo?” he asked. “Wala na, e. Alam na lahat ng mga players yan.”
The reigning champions won the last three games of the title series to knot the best-of-seven finals at 3-3, including Friday’s 86-73 win in Game Six.
Since taking time off on Saturday, Alas said Alaska spent the last two days watching and reviewing game tapes with the entire team.
“More on review kami. May mga plays din from time to time, but we concentrated more on correcting the mistakes we’ve committed in the past games of the finals,” said Alas, who accompanied coach Alex Compton and team manager and governor Dickie Bachmann when Spin.ph honored Alaska star Calvin Abueva with the 2015 Sportsman of the Year award on Saturday night at the Marriot Hotel.
The Alaska deputy added the coaching staff also tries to motivate the players especially with the Aces on the verge of becoming the first team to bungle a commanding 3-0 lead and loss in a title series.
“Ang concern na naming coaches talaga is 'yung mental aspect,” said the former multi-title coach of Letran.
At the same time, Alas lamented the agony of having to wait for five days before the do-or-die encounter.
“Lahat naman yan gusto bukas na ang laban. Ang hirap nung agony of waiting,” he said. “Manalo na kung manalo. Talo na kung talo.”
A lack of venue forced the league to move Game Seven to Wednesday instead of holding it according to the regular PBA schedule on Sunday.
Initially, the Philsports Arena was tapped to hold Game Seven, only for the league to reconsider and wait until it can hold the game in a bigger venue to accommodate the expected huge number of fans eager to watch it live.
