ALASKA coach Alex Compton believes the relatively long break before Game Seven of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals will benefit San Miguel Beer more than the Aces will.
The finals protagonists, which have been facing off usually every other day, have four days to recuperate before the deciding game of the best-of-seven series on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
June Mar Fajardo appears to benefit the most as the SMB superstar continues to recover from a left knee injury, despite already playing in the last two games.
“I think the rest is actually better for San Miguel than us,” Compton said after the Aces lost Game Six, 100-89 on Friday night.
SMB coach Leo Austria thinks the rest favors both squads.
“I think it (rest) will be good for both teams," he said. "I think June Mar will be able to recover. Until now, he's only seventy percent. I hope in Game Seven, maka-eighty-five to ninety na."
Compton, however, was quick to contradict his own statement, stressing the Beermen are fresher than the Aces, considering Calvin Abueva played in two international stints, teaming up with Vic Manuel in one, before the start of the season-opening conference.
“Some people have written that they’re (Beermen) tired, but I think they shouldn’t be any more tired than us,” Compton said. “We got guys doing some stuff for Gilas. Calvin and Vic played three-on-three and they didn’t have anyone doing that stuff.
“So they’re rested,” he added. “I think they’re fresh.”
Compton and Austria gave thier respective teams the day-off on Saturday, before they plunge back to practice on Sunday.
