Alaska Aces frustrate Ginebra as Baguio makes big plays in endgame

    Sep 1, 2013

IMPORT Wendell Mckines buried a big basket off a feed by Cyrus Baguio with 11 ticks to go to lead Alaska to a pulsating 102-99 win over Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Governors Cup on Sunday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

McKines was a tower of strength inside for the Aces, coming away with 20 of his team-high 27 points in the second half while adding 16 rebounds and five assists in another scintillating all-around performance.

“Nice to see Wendell McKines scratch and claw because he was getting a little pikon on the defense of Wlly Wilson and other (Ginebra) guys,” said Alaska coach Luigi Trillo.

“He (McKines) needed to play through that (physical defense).”

Baguio also came up big down the stretch, hitting a three-pointer to keep Ginebra within sight before attracting a double-team in Alaska's final play before feeding McKines for the basket that made it a three-point game, 102-99.

Ginebra had two cracks at a tying basket in the final play but missed both, allowing the Aces to pull through with their second win in three games.

Mark Caguioa had the last crack at a game-tying three-pointer for Ginebra and pleaded for a foul, claiming he was bumped by an Alaska defender on his way up.

When no foul was called, Ginebra was doomed to its third loss in four games.

Alaska managed to recover its bearings after blowing an early 16-point third quarter lead and allowing the Gin Kings to erect several eight-point spreads during the early stages of the fourth period.

But the Aces went down low to McKines when Ginebra’s remaining big man Billy Mamaril fouled out, attacking the paint relentlessly.

“Looking at other teams, no one has won back-to-back games except Barako Bull and Petron, so I told the guys we needed to follow this one up. So it’s just nice to get this win,” said Trillo.
