DO you know why Jimmy Alapag, all five feet and nine inches of him, loves to compete and never backs down from any challenge – even if he spends most days playing against players a full head taller than him?
Part of the reason is Alapag has become so used to being around competitive people at home.
“She being competitive, I know she pushed me to be the best person and the best basketball player that I can be,” said Alapag as he stole a glance at his lovely wife, actress LJ Moreno.
Love for competition is one thing the Alapags share in common, and instead of creating friction in the household it has brought them even closer as a couple, LJ said.
“Being competitive separately, we complement each other,” she said.
And it isn’t just one way in favor of the professional athlete in the family.
LJ said her husband’s competitive side has helped her a lot when she took part in the inaugural run of Amazing Race Philippines, which the petite celebrity won with friend CJ Jaravata.
“When I joined Amazing Race siya pa nagbibigay ng tips, nagte-take down ng notes, nanonood ng mga videos and he tells me what to do," said LJ, also a former contestant in Pinoy Fear Factor.
"So ok naman, maganda yung balance namin.”
And you would think that an MVP trophy, two Best Player of the Conference awards, countless All-Star selections, and several PBA championships would spare Alapag from criticism from his wife.
Nope. LJ, as big a supporter that she is, also happens to be Mr. Alapag's biggest critic.
“Kasi nga competitive ako, so minsan para sa akin bawal siyang mag-miss,” laughed LJ, who is a regular at courtside when Talk 'N Text and Alapag are playing.
“So pag nagmi-miss siya ng free throw (ayaw ko). Gusto ko perfect asawa ko.”
For the TnT star, that's exactly the way he wants it.
“As supportive as she is she’ll also critique me when I get home when I had bad games or I don’t shoot the ball well," Alapag said. "And again it’s part of her being supportive and honest even when you don’t want to hear it sometimes.
“But again it’s a huge help and I’m lucky to have my wife providing that support,” he added.
