AL Thornton played down his offensive explosion for NLEX in its 131-127 triple-overtime loss to San Miguel Beer in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Tuesday.

The Road Warriors import exploded for 69 points – the highest in his career and most by any PBA player in over two decades, but the massive production went for naught as his team lost.

“I kind of scored a couple of points, but it’s still a loss, so it’s not really that significant,” Thornton said. “It’s not really that special to me.”

“When I usually score like that, it usually results in a win, so it’s kind of bittersweet,” the NBA veteran added.

Thornton forced overtime when he buried a tough right-wing three-pointer over two defenders that beat the regulation buzzer. He could’ve won the game for the Road Warriors in the second extra session had his slam over June Mar Fajardo beat the buzzer.

“The only reason I dunked the ball, because I saw June Mar come in, so I knew if I had laid it up, I felt like he would block it,” the 6-foot-8 forward said.

“But I should’ve laid it up,” he added. “If I did, that would’ve been the game.”

Still, Thornton can take some positives from the loss against a Beermen side that won three of the last four conference championships.

“It’s just shows that we’re improving,” Thornton said. "I think my teammates played hard on defense. Down the stretch, we didn’t execute that well on offense, but I think the intensity was there.

"I think we’re being more consistent with that in terms of our defensive intensity. I’m proud of that aspect of our game.”
