AL Thornton took his sweet time in resting and taking a bath after NLEX’s 96-90 victory over Barangay Ginebra on Wednesday night, leaving scribes waiting for an hour for a three-minute interview.
No complaints. The guy deserved a break.
After all, the Road Warriors import just scored a PBA season-high 50 points in leading his team to the come-from-behind win in the Commissioner’s Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
After freshening up, Thornton felt he could’ve scored more.
“I should’ve had sixty,” he said, drawing laughter from the press.
Playing their first game in almost two weeks or since February 27 when they beat Meralco, 89-76, Thornton felt the effects of rust in the first 24 minutes.
“I was huffing and puffing in the first half, but we came out in the second half and executed and played NLEX basketball.”
It seems the long layoff also made him make just 11 of his 18 attempts from the charity stripe.
“I missed way too many free throws, but all in all, I’m glad we got the win.”
After scoring just two points in the first quarter, the American reinforcement poured in 48 in the last three periods to reach his impressive output in 45 minutes.
“My teammates did a great job in getting me the ball,” Thornton said, recounting the last time he scored 50 was in high school.
