QUASHING rumors that he is set to be traded to Air21, Barangay Ginebra forward Willy Wilson blamed a respiratory tract infection as reason that kept him away from the Kings’ bench in the last four games.
“I’ve been coughing a lot, I can’t seem to stop coughing that I had to see my doctor often. I was not allowed to do anything strenuous muna,” Wilson, who played in Ginebra’s conference opener versus Air 21, told Spin.ph.
Speculations over a Wilson move to the Express started two months ago and heightened when the 32-year-old undersized but overachieving big man went missing from the Kings’ recent matches and practices.
Although he has heard of the trade rumors, the former De La Salle Green Archer believes it won’t take place.
“They said I’m gonna be traded to Air 21,” Wilson said, laughing. “Pero bakit ganun? Of all teams, bakit sa Air 21 pa di ba? Parang hindi talaga totoo?,” added Wilson, who once had a highly publicized rift with college coach and now Express mentor Franz Pumaren.
Besides, Wilson pointed out Air21 is already heavy with players who play the same position as him, namely KG Canaleta, Mark Isip, and Noy Baclao.
Ginebra chief mentor Alfrancis Chua also was quick to stress the versatile Wilson's value to the Kings.
“Willy is a very smart player, he can play three and four and he can create mismatches on defense. Ang ganda niya dumepensa,” said Chua of his player who can also score when needed.
The 6-foot-3 dribbler already rejoined Ginebra’s practice on Friday morning and is expected to suit up versus Rain or Shine on Sunday.
“I’ll just suit up, pero hindi pa ko maglalaro," he declared. “Two weeks kasi ako nawala so I need to get back my condition."
“I’m not at the same level I was before I was sick. But give me three days, I’m good, I can get my timing back."
