DESPITE title-less in the last seven years, Ginebra die-hard fans remain loyal to their team as they epitomized the franchise’s old dictum of ‘never-say-die.’
Take for instance on this rainy Thursday night, long-time Ginebra supporter Ahyen Lasala braved the flooded streets from Batangas all the way to Ermita in Manila just to see members of the team in the flesh as they celebrate their grand fans day coinciding with the World Gin Day.
Lasala has been a Ginebra fan for 14 years which started when star guard Mark Caguioa first played for the Kings in 2001.
“Unang beses ako naging fan ng Ginebra May 2001 because of Mark Caguioa, then hanggang sa tumagal tinanggap ko na ‘yung team,” she recalled as food and drinks flowed inside the Belagio Square.
“Mas minahal ko na sila hanggang ngayon at kaya ko silang ipagtanggol even sa social media,” she added.
Just like any die-hard fans, Lasala, 27, would also cry and lost her appetite every time Ginebra would lose a game.
Ginebra last won a PBA championship in 2008, and Lasala admitted it has been a long seven-year of waiting for the team’s legion of supporters.
“Hindi ko rin alam (bakit sila ang gusto ko). Maraming beses na akong umiiyak, namamayat ako dahil sa Ginebra pag natatalo sila. Mahal ko talaga sila,” she said.
“Kahit pitong taon na kaming nasa kangkungan syempre nandito pa rin ako,” Lasala added.
