AFTER fulfilling its date with destiny, it’s time for Ginebra to build a dynasty.

Gin Kings coach Tim Cone is hoping his team can make the jump to a consistent championship contender after ruling the PBA Governors’ Cup at the expense of Meralco on Wednesday night to end an eight-year title drought.

“We want to come back and we want to try to get to that elite level like some of the other teams have gotten to: San Miguel, recently, Talk ‘N Text, Purefoods,” Cone said. “We would like to get to that level, and that's what we're gonna work for.”

The league’s most successful coach stressed the Gin Kings will be no one-hit wonders, confident that they can indeed dominate the league in the foreseeable future.

“This is not ‘a’ championship. In our minds, this is our ‘first’ championship,” said Cone, who steered Ginebra to a title in just his third conference at the helm. “This is not the only championship that we're gonna get. We're gonna go out and get another one. We're not into just winning a championship, we want to win many.”

What’s scarier is star big man Greg Slaughter is yet in tow as he recovers from ACL surgery, while the Gin Kings have two high picks in the upcoming rookie draft and another pick in the special draft for the Gilas cadets.

“That's our challenge and we want to continue to grow as a team,” Cone said. “It wasn't our goal to win a championship, our goal is to win many championships, and we have to continue to have growth, grow from this one into the next one, into the next conference, and take what we've learned here.”
