Adversity makes Alaska run to semis sweeter, says Compton

ALEX Compton said it best: “I miss the semis.”

The American mentor heaved a sigh of relief after Alaska finally broke through and got the job done against Magnolia, 89-78, in their 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday.

“You have no idea. After all we’ve been through, this feels so good,” he said.

Compton felt a big thorn being taken out after Alaska returned to the Final Four for the first time since the 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

The hurdles the Aces had to overcome along the way – Calvin Abueva going MIA, Jeron Teng getting stabbed in a melee, and former import Antonio Campbell - made the feat all the more sweeter.

“I’m so proud of my team. I was telling some coaching friends, where in the coach’s manual does it say when all of those things go array, when we’re doing such good things and adversities hit, what do we do?” he shared.

“And when those happened, I didn’t see anything in any of our players other than fight and other than desire. And there’s no excuse-making, no finger-pointing, no looking for alibis. That just made me so proud of our guys.”

"To get to the semifinals this conference, it’s really a huge weight lifted off of our shoulders,” he said.

But now comes the hard part: a semifinal duel against either San Miguel or TNT KaTropa.

It's not something Compton looks forward to.

“I have no idea what will happen in the semis. I don’t want to play either of those teams, but we’re gonna have to. I’m proud of my guys and we’re gonna do our best,” he said.
