YENG Guiao was absent from Game Two of the PBA Commissioner's Cup semifinal series between his Rain or Shine team and San Miguel.
But the fiery coach made sure the Elasto Painters didn't miss him by making personal calls to some of his players hours before Tuesday night's game for last-minute instructions and motivation.
Big man JR Quinahan was one of them.
"Tumawag siya sa amin isa isa sa mga beterano. Sabi niya guys sabihan ninyo yung mga teammates nyo, yung mga bago na walang bibitaw. Kaya natin ito," recalled the burly big man about his conversation with his coach.
"Yun ang bilin niya sa amin walang bibitaw."
Quinahan took Guiao's words to heart as he scored all nine of his points in the fourth quarter to help Rain or Shine survive a scorching rally by San Miguel, 98-96, for a 2-0 lead in the best of five series.
The Cebuano big man said Guiao is set to return to practice on Wednesday after missing Game Two due to an important matter he had to deal with in his province of Pampanga where he is running for reelection as congressman in the first district.
Guiao also urged the Elasto Painters to get the job done in his absence and hopefully, finish the series by Thursday when Game Three is played at the Philsports Arena.
Quinahan said the team was motivated not to let the coach down.
"Kung swertihin. Basta di kami susuko. Gusto namin ulit makabalik sa finals, " he added.
