GEE Abanilla is set to take over as Petron head coach with the Indonesia Warriors' American coach Todd Purves eyed to come in as an active consultant in a coaching rigodon for San Miguel Corp.-owned teams, multiple sources told Spin.ph on Monday.
Current Petron coach Olsen Racela will be moved to San Mig Coffee to serve as one of Tim Cone's assistants in the shuffle, the sources added.
Purves led the Warriors to the Asean Basketball League title last season at San Miguel's expense while Abanilla was recently replaced as La Salle head coach by longtime Ginebra assistant coach Juno Sauler.
Leo Austria, who recently led the Beermen to the ABL title with a sweep of Purves' Warriors in the Finals, was supposed to figure prominently in the shuffle but was left out since he still has a contract with UAAP squad Adamson Falcons that won't expire until next year.
The pro league bars its coaches from handling college squads in a concurrent role.
Purves, who was named the ABL's Coach of the Year last season, is expected to work closely with Abanilla in a set-up similar to Racela's partnership with former national coach Rajko Toroman in the Philippine Cup.
Spin.ph tried to reach San Miguel Corp. sports director Noli Eala for confirmation but the team official was not available for comment.
Eala is the one in charge of internal affairs of the Petron squad, having also tendered the contract offer to import prospect Othyus Jeffers for the Governors Cup.
