A LITTLE superstition has worked wonders for Gary David.
Given a rare home pass by coach Chot Reyes, the misfiring Gilas Pilipinas gunner took the opportunity to grab all the 'lucky' clothes he wore in the biggest games of his career and donned them for the all-important knockout match against Kazakhstan on Friday night.
It apparently paid off.
The Globalport star scored 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field in lifting Gilas to an 88-58 win over Kazakhstan and a berth in the Fiba-Asia semifinals while atoning for all the bad games he played for the national team in the preliminaries.
After averaging just 2.6 points in Gilas' first six games, David was on fire from the get-go as he scored his first three-pointers in lifting the Philippines to a 32-15 advantage that was never threatened by the stunned Kazakhstan side.
David later thanked Reyes for allowing him to go home with his family, even for just two hours on Thursday. (To view full story, see Gary David granted rare home pass as he seeks to rediscover old shooting form)
Aside from spending quality time with his family, David also gathered all the old jerseys wherein he played well in the PBA to wear for the no-tomorrow match.
Naging kumportable ako,” said David in a short interview with a handful of reporters after the game.
When a reporter asked what he wore, David said “Basta underwear.”
The team has been staying at the Dusit Hotel but David said going home really helped a lot in getting his old shooting rhythm back.
Despite his shooting struggles becoming national news and making him a target of bashers online, David said he never thought about his shooting slump.
Eto siguro ‘yung naging reward,” said David.
David also gave credit to Filipino fans who never gave up on him.
