PASIG Grindhouse Kings survived a physical tiff against San Juan Knights-Go for Gold, 19-18, on Sunday at SM Fairview Events Center to book the elusive ticket to the Doha Masters of the 2019 Fiba World Tour on April 18 and 19 in Qatar.
The two-time leg champions' semifinal win in the Grand Finals was enough to secure the maximum points through the five legs of the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3 President's Cup.
Pasig Grindhouse currently sits at 360 points, and with it assured of finishing no lower than second place, no other team can top them in the standings through the five legs of the first-of-its-kind 3x3 tourney.
But it wasn't easy.
Taylor Statham willed his side to the victory, bullying his way in the paint to get the go-ahead bucket for the Kings with 35 seconds remaining.
Mac Cardona and John Wilson both tried to steal the game late, but missed their long bombs, but the window remained open for the Knights after Statham lost the ball with 7.1 seconds remaining.
Statham, though, atoned for that miscue, halting Cardona's potential game-tying drive as time expired.
"There's a lot riding on it for me and it's bigger than basketball," remarked the Fil-Am forward as Pasig Grindhouse paraded mainstays Joshua Munzon, Troy Rike, and debutant Leo de Vera in lieu for the injured Dylan Ababou.
The Kings now advance to the championship, where it has a chance to claim the P1 million cash prize.
Pasig Grindhouse earlier claimed one of the two tickets to the Chooks-to-Go 3x3 Asia Pacific Super Quest, together with 1Bataan Risers, next Saturday at SM Megamall.
