CEBU CITY - University of the Visayas accomplished a rare three-peat as it beat Cebu Institute of Technology, 85-67, to complete a sweep of the 2013 Enervon-Cesafi Partner’s Cup best-of-three Finals on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Even with their two African imports in Steve Akomo and Mike Harry sitting on the bench and acting as the team’s two biggest cheerleaders, the Lancers still mustered enough firepower to blow the game wide open in the second period when they outscored the Wildcats, 26-15, for a 41-25 lead at the half.
The Lancers never looked back from there.
It was the third straight Partner’s Cup title for UV – and second in a row with Prime Asia as the school’s chief backer.
Winning one championship after another is nothing new to the Lancers as proof of their nine-year title run in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) from 2001 to 2009.
Forward Chris Perolino led the Lancers’ second quarter uprising to cushion the miserable shooting performance of tournament MVP John Abad.
Perolino paced the Lancers with 19 points, while Cesafi Rookie of the Year-MVP Wowie Escosio and Angelo Babia added 12 and 11, respectively.
Abad missed his first six shots from beyond the arc to finish with just seven points.
The Wildcats got 11 from Floyd Taboada and 10 apiece from Vincent Menguito and Clyvin Lima-Lima as Mythical Five member Vincent Menguito struggled from the field and finished with two points.
Abad, Escosio and Perolino were all named as part of the Mythical Five squad along with Menguito and Dimco.
Prime Asia (85) - Perolino 19, Escosio 12, Babia 11, Abad 7, Mendoza 7, Codilla 7, Octobre 6, Cabañero 6, Marquez 5, Fajardo 5.
San Marino (67) - Taboada 11, Limalima 10, Dimco 10, De la Cerna 8, Batiquin 7, Tabalin 6, Bucao 5, Brigoli 3, Polo 3, Graf 2, Menguito 2.
