Olivarez College kept its winning streak going with a 72-64 decision over Jose Rizal University in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) Summer Invitational at the Buddhacare gym in Quezon City.
Archie Sunga scored 12 points and grabbed two rebounds in just 18 minutes of play for the Sea Lions, who remained the only unbeaten team in the six-team preseason tournament.
He was ably supported by Klarenz Singh and Vinny Begaso who combined for 21 points, including key baskets down the stretch that kept the Bombers at bay.
The Bombers dropped to 1-2 despite Leo Esguerra’s 20 points.
In other matches of the tournament backed by Ever Bilena-Blackwater, Smart, Advanced Solution, Inc. and Manila Bulletin, Diliman College of coach Renzy Bajar outlasted College of St. Benilde, 60-58, while National University slipped past Centro Escolar, 68-66.
Rick Gerero shot well from the field and finished with 21 points for the Diliman squad that improved to 2-1 while John Clemente paced the Bulldogs with 16 points.
NU’s win was its first in three games, tying CEU and Benilde.
