BOBBY Ray Parks scored 23 points, including the three-pointer that sent the game into overtime, as National University defeated NCAA champion San Beda, 73-71, on Saturday in the opening game of the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan.

Parks’ three-pointer levelled the count at 64 and his heroics didn't end there, with the two time UAAP MVP scoring the go-ahead basket in overtime.

To cap his game-long brilliance which he dedicated to his late father Bobby, Parks also played good defense to deny Rome Dela Rosa a decent look at a game-tying basket as time expired.

Parks showed up for the game donning his late dad's No. 22 on his jersey, and pointed to the sky after making the two big plays in the endgame.

NU coach Eric Altamirano admitted the defending champions are still in the adjusting period.

“Obviously, we still have a long way to go. The fluidity isn’t there yet, we are still making mistakes in our defensive rotation. But again, it’s still three months away,” Altamirano said.

“We want to use these games to improve our game. But today’s game was a test for us since we are facing one of the best collegiate teams in the country. We were just blessed to win that game.”

Cameroonian Alfred Aroga gave a good account of himself in his first game in the tournament, scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs. Rosario also had a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Baser Amer could only split his free throws to make it a 64-61 game for San Beda, opening the door for Parks’ game-tying three-pointer to force the overtime period.

Parks was fouled while scoring on a driving lay-up in the final two minutes of the extra time. He missed the bonus charity, but Troy Rosario’s follow-up dunk put the Bulldogs in front, 71-70.

Comebacking David Semerad scored inside as the Lions retake the lead, but Parks drilled a medium range jumper as NU stayed in front for good, 72-71.
